Hey Universal! ‘The Mummy’ is More Popular Than Ever Due to Your Mistake. Embrace It.

A few days ago, IMAX for the upcoming adventure/horror reboot The Mummy that had one simple glaring issue: it was missing nearly all audio. There were some incidental ambient sounds playing here and there but the majority of the audio came from the actors and had their screams, grunts, groans, and yells on full display. Without anything else to back them up, they sounded rather hilarious and were ridiculously out of place. With the internet being what it is, that video instantly became fodder for all sorts of memes.

For example, how about replacing the infamous “Wilhelm Scream” with the newly adored “Cruise Scream”? Or what about inserting it into ? Maybe toss it into ?

While they should be adoring all the free press The Mummy is now getting because of this simple blunder, Universal has instead begun . In fact, they’re doing it en masse, which might be the stupidest thing they could possible do.

Hear me out Universal, okay? You’ve got people who are so amazed by this botched trailer that they are now watching all sorts of memes make their rounds, knowing full well where it originates from. The Mummy is so ingrained in peoples’ minds now that there is going to be far more interest in the film as it nears its release date. People are going to want to see this movie because they’ll be part of something bigger, something that goes beyond whatever the film has to offer. And you’re actively trying to stop that from happening.

A mistake was made and the wrong trailer got uploaded. Now it’s everywhere and you can’t stop it. But why should you? Embrace it! Roll with it! Use it to your advantage! Hell, make a contest out of it and have people submit their best revision or take on the botched trailer. Get people involved and spread it far and wide. The movie will have its own tone and atmosphere and that’s fine. But let people have their fun meanwhile.

    • I’m not sure. It seems like you’ll have to really dig for it as it appears they’re desperate to take down every copy of it.
