Having clearly enjoyed his time making the similarly socially-aware science fiction thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, actor John Goodman is coming back the the genre for seconds. Goodman has joined the cast of Captive State, the latest film by Rupert Wyatt. Wyatt and Goodman previously worked together on the 2014 remake of The Gambler, which starred Mark Wahlberg. Here’s the project’s synopsis, courtesy of Collider…
“Captive State is a sci-fi thriller set in a Chicago neighborhood nearly a decade after it has been occupied by an extraterrestrial force. Captive State uses a grounded sci-fi setting to shine light on the modern surveillance state and the threats to civil liberties and the role of dissent within an authoritarian society.”
Captive State is expected to begin filming next month in Chicago. The project was written by co-written by Wyatt and screenwriter Erica Beeney (The Battle of Shaker Heights). Thus far, the only other cast member attached to the film is Ashton Sanders (Moonlight). Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners will produce, with currently Focus Feature set as its domestic distributor. Amblin Pictures also recently set up the Kate McKinnon-starring fantasy comedy, The Lunch Witch.
In addition to 10 Cloverfield Lane, noted character actor John Goodman also starred last year in Peter Berg’s Patriots Days, which is finally hitting cinemas nationwide this coming weekend. Goodman will next be seen this year in Kong: Skull Island, as well as The Coldest City, Once Upon a Time in Venice, and Spring Break ’83. This year his vocal talents will also be showcased in Transformers: The Last Knight, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and Bunyan and Babe.
Rupert Wyatt is best known for directing Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Fox’s 2011 reboot of the classic science fiction franchise. He has also directed the crime thriller The Escapist and the aforementioned remake of The Gambler. Wyatt most recently directed the pilots for TV shows such as AMC’s Turn: Washington’s Spies and Fox’s The Exorcist.
