‘Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown Joins ‘Godzilla 2’

just made my day! According to the outlet, “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown has joined the cast of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. That’s right, Eleven is going to meet the Big G! The forthcoming sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla remake is being helmed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus), from a script by Dougherty and Zach Shields. While the film isn’t due in theaters until March 22nd, 2019, our sources tell us that the project could be gearing up to shoot this summer. Given that casting is now underway, that does appear to be the case.

Such a move might seem a bit early, but given the FX-filled nature of the project, the earlier they film the live action elements, the better. This second film is rumored to be including more classic Toho kaiju beasts, possibly even the likes of Mothra, Rodan, and/or the villainous King Ghidorah. If all three are indeed appearing in the seuel, it sounds like we might be in for a loose remake of 1964’s Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster. That particular Toho offering, which is a favorite of mine, saw the bickering (and occasionally battling) triumvirate of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan forced to ally themselves to take down the cosmic menace of King Ghidorah. It also had a subplot about an amnesiac princess from a small fictional nation being hunted by members of her own royal staff. Such an arc might sound a bit silly, but trust me when I say that these films tend to play better when the humans have something to do beyond just screaming every time a monster shows up.

It is unclear at this time as to whether or not any cast members will return from the 2014 film. If I had to guess, I’d bet that only Ken Watanabe and/or Sally Hawkins and their Monarch-employed come back. While I like both Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as performers, they were given extremely thin characters that ultimately weren’t very engaging. If they do return in some capacity, I’m sure that Dougherty and Shields will give them some better material to work with. Regardless, based on how great Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus are, I have little doubt that Dougherty will give Millie Bobby Brown plenty of scenes to shine in here.

As we wait for more info in the coming months, we at least have the great-looking Kong: Skull Island to sit down with soon. It’s set in the same universe, with John Goodman’s William Randa also being a member of the mysterious Monarch agency. You can check out the latest TV spot for that film below…
