Variety is reporting that actor Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights“, Super 8) is in talks to join the cast of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The Warner Bros. sequel to their 2014 hit is slated to go into production this summer, ahead of a planned March 22nd, 2019 release. While details on the sequel’s plot remain scarce at this time, Chandler will apparently be playing the father of Millie Bobby Brown‘s character.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be the third film in Warner Bros. kaiju movieverse, following on from 2014’s Godzilla and this year’s Kong: Skull Island. The latter film is already confirmed to contain more than a few connections to the world they are building, including an end credits tag sequence that may or may not contain (or reference) multiple classic Godzilla characters.
These movieverse will culminate in Godzilla vs. Kong, which is currently slated to arrive in theaters on May 29, 2020. Whether or not we get further Godzilla and Kong films beyond that point is anyone’s guess. A large part of this conjoined franchise’s future will surely depend on each offering’s box office draw, as well as whether or not Toho continues to allow Warner Bros. to use their characters. The long-running Japanese studio cleared Warner Bros. to use characters Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in the wake of the 2014’s success. One or all of them are currently expected to make some sort of appearance in King of the Monsters, although nothing has been confirmed on that front at this time.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be helmed by Michael Dougherty. The filmmaker’s previous directorial efforts are popular horror films Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus, plus he has written numerous other big projects in Hollywood (such as X2: X-Men United). He has penned the screenplay himself, alongside co-writer Zach Shields.
