Joe Carnahan To Write ‘X-Force’

Everything is coming up Joe Carnahan these days! He’s writing and producing the soon-to-film Uncharted for Sony. He’s directing Bad Boys For Life for them as well, with a late 2018 start date planned. He’s writing and producing Five Against A Bullet, starring Jackie Chan. He’s remaking The Raid with Frank Grillo. And now, on top of all that, he will apparently write the next script for X-Force. Kudos to Collider for the scoop. As a long-time fan of the filmmaker, it’s nice to finally see him getting so much love from the studio system.

The X-Men spin-off project has been in the works for years now. At one point, it was even scheduled to go forward with Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) directing a script by long-time X-Men writer/producer Simon Kinberg. The project was ultimately backburned, seemingly on hold until the studio figured out a new way to introduce the characters. Their solution? Including them in Deadpool sequels first. X-Force mainstays Cable and Domino are both expected to make their first appearance in next year’s Deadpool 2, which is set to film later this year. No actors have been cast in either role at this time, although Pierce Brosnan and Kerry Washington are the current favorites for them.

The already-in-the-works (but not officially greenlit) Deadpool 3 is expected to introduce even more of the X-Force team. One assumes that a solo X-Force film will then split off from there. Since Deadpool 3 will probably arrive around 2020, if all goes to plan, I wouldn’t be surprised if X-Force hits the same year or in 2021. Fox would be silly to not let Carnahan helm the project, so should he agree, such a schedule would line up pretty well for the filmmaker after he finishes up work on both Bad Boys For Life and The Raid.

This sounds pretty damned interesting, but 2021 is a long way off. I’m “cautiously optimistic”, but this has already been kicking around for some time. I believe I’ll wait a while before I begin holding my breath.

It’s nuts that we live in a world where studios are publicly planning films 3-4 years out.

I know, right? That’s kind of silly, if you ask me. And we recently had a reminder that even if a movie gets the green light, and is about to begin production, there are still no guarantees. (Friday the 13th, anyone?)
