Netflix Unveils The First Teaser For ‘Death Note’

In the works for years, the American adaptation of the classic Japanese manga Death Note is finally arriving this summer. After initially being developed at New Line Cinema, the project moved to Netflix last year, becoming one of the bigger original films that they have produced to date. Now that we’re beginning to close in on its release, the streaming giant has finally offered up a teaser trailer for the flick…

As someone with only a vague awareness of the property, this short tease does the trick. It seems to be evoking a lot of the concepts and characters iconic to the source, while also keeping an air of mystery in play. Bottom line? This has a cool concept, a nice cast, it looks intriguing, and it’s directed by Adam Wingard. I wasn’t much of a fan of his Blair Witch last year, but that doesn’t outweigh how good A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, and The Guest are. I’m in for whatever he has in store for us here.

Death Note is based upon the popular Japanese manga. It is directed by Adam Wingard, from a screenplay by Charles Parlapanides, Vlas Parlapanides, and Jeremy Slater. The picture is produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Masi Oka, and Jason Hoffs. It stars Nat Wolff as ‘Light Turner’, Margaret Qualley as ‘Mia Sutton’, Keith Stanfield as ‘L’, Paul Nakauchi as ‘Watari’, Shea Whigham as ‘James Turner’, and Willem Dafoe as the voice of ‘Ryuk’. Masi Oka, Michael Shamus Wiles, Matthew Kevin Anderson, Christian Sloan, Jack Ettlinger, Chris Britton, Jesse Stretch, and Artin John also star.

Death Note premieres on Netflix on August 25th, 2017.
