It’s been almost 15 years since the Tomb Raider film franchise last graced the screen. After the second Angelina Jolie film underperformed, it went quiet, while the video games continued their success. Now it’s finally back, newly-rebooted with Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) playing Lara Croft, the titular lead. The project is still filming, of course, so we have a ways to go before we can see it. That isn’t stopping MGM and Warner Bros. from teasing it, however. Today we have been given a couple official stills from the production, as well as an official synopsis…
“Seven years after the disappearance of her father, 21-year-old Lara has refused to take the reins of his global business empire, instead working as a bike courier in London while taking college classes. Eventually she becomes inspired to investigate her father’s disappearance and travels to his last-known location: a tomb on an island somewhere off the coast of Japan.
Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who – against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit – must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.”
Tomb Raider is the latest film based on the popular video game franchise of the same name. It is directed by Roar Uthaug (Cold Prey, The Wave), from a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The film stars Alicia Vikander as ‘Lara Croft’, Walton Goggins as ‘Father Mathias Vogel’, Daniel Wu as ‘Lu Ren’, Dominic West as ‘Lord Richard Croft’, Alexandre Willaume as ‘Conrad Roth’, and Leo Ashizawa as ‘Alex Ren’. Adrian Collins and Vere Tindale also appear.
Tomb Raider is currently slated to arrive in theaters on March 16th, 2018.
