We’ve known for awhile now that we’d be getting a younger incarnation of Albus Dumbledore in next year’s sequel to Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them. Many names have been tossed out by fans, including a lot of support for British actor Jared Harris, who happens to be the son of original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris. Surprisingly we haven’t seen much in the way of outright credible rumors for the part, which makes this casting announcement come as a bit of a surprise. That’s right, the wait is over! Who is our new Dumbledore? According to , it is none other than Jude Law.
Law has seemingly struck gold here. With the Sherlock Holmes series still lying in limbo as Robert Downey Jr. flies around in a mechanical suit at Marvel and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword unlikely to score sequels, Law joining the Harry Potter prequel series finally grants the British thespian a long-running franchise at Warner Bros. Considering this affords him the financial freedom to do more indie work between wand-slinging adventures, even non-Potter fans who like Law should be happy by this turn of events.
Filming on the still-untitled sequel is slated to begin this August in England. David Yates returns to direct from an original script by Potter creator J.K. Rowling. Casting wise, all of the surviving regulars from last year’s film will be returning: Eddie Redmayne, Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoe Kravitz, and Johnny Depp. The latter two will see expanded roles, with Depp’s Gellert Grindelwald becoming a main antagonist for the remaining four films.
Fantastic Beasts 2 is currently slated to arrive in theaters on November 16th, 2018.
