MTV Is Reworking The ‘Scream’ Series

The cast of the first couple of seasons of “Scream” have finished out their time on it, but the series will continue onward. is reporting that MTV is reworking the slasher show, including bringing in a new showrunner and producing team. Brett Matthews (“Supernatural“, “The Vampire Diaries“) is coming on board as the showrunner for a 6-episode third season, with Shakim Compere, Yaneley Arty, and none other than Queen Latifah producing.

It seems that the only returning folks are producers Harvey & Bob Weinstein, as well as a continued posthumous credit for filmmaker Wes Craven. This new season will chart a completely different direction from what came before. Whether or not it will have any narrative connection to the existing seasons and last year’s Halloween special is unknown at this time.

I cannot speak to how this affects the overall narrative of the show, as I have only seen the first season. Given that this change is coming as a result of the ratings plummeting during Season 2, I guess that makes me part of the problem. I have heard that 2016’s feature-length Halloween special pretty much wrapped up everything, but cannot speak to that definitively at this time.

This seems like an odd move to me. Why not just cancel the show? Is the brand still that valuable after what amounts to a failed theatrical revival (2011’s Scream 4) and a show that hasn’t really caught on? Mind you I still plan on catching up and giving this third season a shot, but it seems to me that Scream is a brand that just isn’t clicking with the current generation. Perhaps it’s best to just let it fade away for awhile.
