I love going to the movies. It doesn’t matter if I’m seeing something new or old, I’m always happy to be seated before a big screen. Retro screenings are a staple in big areas, but far less common once you live away from major and semi-major cities. Rarer still is the opportunity to see a screening and have the director in attendance, unless you live in New York or L.A.. As luck would have it for anyone living in, around, or within driving distance of Columbus, Ohio, you’re about to get the chance to see two horror gems on the big screen and meet their director. That’s right, it’s time for a Maniac Cop double-feature with Bill Lustig (Maniac, Relentless)…

For those who haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Maniac Cop and Maniac Cop 2 yet, you’re in for a treat. The first two films in a pretty wild trilogy, both are excellent slices of ’80s horror and among Lustig’s best work as a filmmaker. Who doesn’t want to see Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins stalked by an insane, murderous cop (Robert Z’Dar)? Then follow it up with Robert Davi (The Goonies, Licence to Kill) going toe-to-toe with the hulking undead cop, who now has a crazed sidekick (Halloween II‘s Leo Rossi)? Who wouldn’t be down for that? Nobody I want to know.
The first is a violent, sleazy take on the slasher subgenre. The second is a rip-roaring action movie sequel with everything cranked up to 11. Bottom line? You’re nuts if you are available and can make to Gateway Film Center on May 20th and choose not to. Trust me, you’re going to have a blast. Plus it’ll prepare you for the upcoming remake of the original!
