‘American Gods’ Renewed For Second Season

Bilquis be praised! Starz has already renewed “American Gods” for a second season, according to Entertainment Weekly. It seems that Bryan Fuller‘s adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s modern fantasy classic is raking in the ratings for the cable network, with the two episodes that have aired thus far pulling an average of 5 million viewers across multiple platforms. Way to go, Fuller!

While the series had never been advertised as a limited event, I had wondered how they were proceeding with their adaptation. As someone who has not read the book, I’ve been utterly unable to gauge how they have been progressing through it amidst all of the striking (and often nightmarish) phantasmagorical imagery on display. According to friends who have read it, however, it already seemed as though this season might not make it to the end of the book. I’d say that’s guaranteed now that it will be back for another year.

Having an advanced renewal like this should give Bryan Fuller and his team ample time to not only craft a satisfying cliffhanger ending, but also begin work on plotting out where everything will head in Season 2. That might seem like a no-brainer, but few shows have that luxury. Unless you’re one of the biggest shows on your network, you often don’t even know until after your season has wrapped whether or not you will be returning.

This should also leave more room for further expansion of the material. I know that Neil Gaiman himself has been fairly involved with development of “American Gods“, giving them suggestions for additions, both in terms of plot and new characters. He’ll have even more time to do that now, which is wonderful. I may not be overly familiar with this particular property, beyond the fantastic two episodes that have already aired, but I know Gaiman’s imagination. Trust me, it is a fertile one that will no doubt bear some insane fruit for Fuller to feast upon in this show. I’m all smiles right now.
