When done right, few sub-genre are more fun than heist films. Director Steven Soderbergh has already accomplished this feet thrice over (the Ocean’s Trilogy) and he’s about to do it again. The filmmaker has been on a hiatus from theatrical filmmaking since 2013, although he’s kept himself busy on television in the interim (Behind the Candelabra, “The Knick“). Logan Lucky marks his return to the big screen and boy does it ever look like an uproarious time at the movies…
I was already in for this the moment it was announced as Soderbergh’s next film. I was further in the bag for it when the immensely talented cast was rounded up. After this trailer, I am chomping at the bit to see it as soon as humanly possible. A bunch of backwater criminals robbing a NASCAR racetrack in goofy fashion? With James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, back in character actor mode as a dopey convict with a silly accent? This appears to be Ocean’s Eleven crossed with Coen Bros. comedies like The Ladykillers and Burn After Reading. You couldn’t fashion a heist comedy more perfect for me if you tried. Steven Soderbergh has officially crafted the film I am most looking forward to seeing this summer. Is it August yet?
