According to , The Brothers Warner’s search for a Godzilla vs. Kong director has ended! Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures have closed a deal with Adam Wingard to direct the kaiju clashfest, which is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters in less than three years time. The crossover film will be a culmination of elements born out of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island, and Michael Dougherty’s about-to-shoot Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
No script has been officially finalized for the battle picture as of yet, with the studio setting a writers room for that very task earlier this year. Among others, the team hashing out ideas for the film includes Pirates of the Carribean‘s Terry Rossio, Maze Runner‘s T.S. Nowlin, and “Babylon 5” guru J. Michael Straczynski. There’s also no word at this time as to whether or not the film will carry over cast members or characters from its three predecessors.
Adam Wingard most recently directed Lionsgate’s legacy sequel, Blair Witch, last year and helmed Netflix’s forthcoming American adaptation of Death Note. Horror fans likely know him best for genre gems such as A Horrible Way To Die, You’re Next, and The Guest. This will mark his highest profile project to date.
Wingard is another wonderful get for the studio and the latest in a series of interesting hires for this particular franchise. He’s a young and hungry filmmaker full of energy and creativity, all of which he will no doubt pour into this project. I couldn’t be happy to see an undervalued director of his caliber nab such a perfect project and I cannot wait to see what he does with it.
Godzilla vs. Kong arrives in theaters on May 22nd, 2020.
