AMC‘s TV series adaptation of “Preacher” returns at the end of this month. This year the show promises to finally begin delving deeper into the Garth Ennis source material. Preacher Jesse (Dominic Cooper), certified-badass Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) have hit the road in search of God. Literally.
The trio plan to track the deity down and make him answer for how the world has turned out since he sneaked out of Heaven. They will encounter an assortment of weird and/or devious characters in their journey, including Herr Starr and Arseface, with The Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) in hot pursuit. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first season, which spun its wheels far too much, but I also didn’t find it to be the dumpster fire that a lot of fans claimed. What saved it for me were the performances of Cooper, Negga, and Gilgun.
Say what you will about it being a bad/weird adaptation of the comics, but all three gave it their all, which made the season far more enjoyable than it should have been. With any luck, the writing this season will have risen up to meet them, giving us a far better adaptation. If not, I suspect a great many of the viewers who are still willing to stick with it will bounce in quick succession. Enough gab, however. Here’s the first full trailer for the new season of “Preacher“, which premiers on Sunday, June 25th…
