X-Men Spin-Off ‘New Mutants’ X-Pands Its Cast

Now that production is only a month away, with filming slated for July in Boston, Fox is regularly rolling out casting information for The New Mutants. The latest additions to the cast continue the production’s habit of casting up-and-coming talent. is reporting that actress Blu Hunt (“The Originals“, “This Is Us“) has been cast to play Danielle “Mirage” Moonstar. She joins a roster that also recently added actors Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things“) and Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why“) as Sam “Cannonball” Guthrie and Roberto “Sunspot” da Costa, respectively.

have also linked Marvel favorite Rosario Dawson to the production. The actress, who portrays Claire Temple across the various MCU-set Netflix shows, is reportedly in the running to play Dr. Cecilia Reyes. Her hiring for the gig has not yet been confirmed, but the rumors at least tell us that the character is slated to make an appearance in the film. Other than Reyes, the only main role that we know of left to be filled is Warlock. Given that he will likely be an entirely CG-created character, we likely won’t get word on who will be providing his voice until late this year or early next.

Both Professor X (James McAvoy) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp) were previously expected to appear in the film, but apparently they have since been written out. This is likely due to the fact that both actors will now be busy plays those characters in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which is also expected to begin filming this summer. As you can see, Fox is going full steam ahead in crafting an X-Men Cinematic Universe.

This latest spin-off of the on-going X-Men franchise will see a young team of mutants face off against a threat more suited for a horror film than a superhero flick: the Demon Bear! Boone has repeatedly talked up the horror film angle, telling fans to expect the picture to carry more of a Stephen King vibe and to be smaller in scale than previous X-Men films. Sounds good to me! If Fox truly intends on packing its slate with multiple X-films, the wider variety of tones and styles that they cover, the better. And they certainly intend to pack them in. After all, New Mutants will be the second of THREE such films arriving next year, sandwiched in between the releases of Deadpool 2 and the aforementioned X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

The New Mutants is the 12th film in Fox’s on-going X-Men franchise. The film is directed by Josh Boone, from a screenplay by Boone and Knate Gwaltney. The picture is produced by Simon Kinberg, Karen Rosenfelt, and Lauren Shuler-Donner. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy as ‘Illyana Rasputina/Magik’, Maisie Williams as ‘Wolfsbane’, Charlie Heaton as ‘Sam Guthrie/Cannonball’, Henry Zaga as ‘Roberto da Costa/Sunspot’, and Blu Hunt as ‘Danielle Moonstar/Mirage’.

The New Mutants will arrive in theaters on April 13th, 2018.
