Cate Blanchett Bewitches Eli Roth’s ‘House’

Cate Blanchett is in negotiations to  the cast of Amblin Entertainment’s The House With a Clock in Its Walls. The film will be an adaptation of the classic John Bellairs Gothic horror novel of the same name. Its story revolves around a boy who takes up residence with an estranged uncle (Jack Black). His uncle turns out to be a mediocre witch, but his neighbor and best compatriot, Mrs. Zimmerman, is a more gifted witch. Blanchett will take on the latter role.

Written by John Bellairs with illustrations by Edward Gorey, [the book] tells of a recently orphaned boy who moves in with his uncle. The uncle turns out to be a mediocre witch and the boy soon finds himself in a world of magic and danger, especially when he discovers a clock inside the walls of his house that is designed to bring about doomsday.

Death Wish and Hostel director Eli Roth is directing the film for Amblin. Brad Fischer (Zodiac, Shutter Island), James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Meg), and Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Timeless) are set to produce the project, with Kripke himself responsible for the screenplay. The film is expected to begin production this fall, ahead of a 2018 release. Roth is also on board to direct another project for Amblin: an adaptation of Steve Niles’ Aleister Arcane, with Jim Carrey in the titular role.

Blanchett can next be seen in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok this November.
