Well, this certainly came out of the blue. Ever since the A Star Wars Story (aka Star Wars Anthology) spin-off films were announced as being on the way, we’ve had a decent idea of what to expect. Rogue One was the first one out of the gate, but we always knew that Lucasfilm and Disney were toying around with future installments centered around the likes of Han Solo, Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Yoda. An X-Wing squadron film has even been teased previously. A Jabba the Hutt film, however? That’s a new one!
I’m not even sure how you would go about this. For one, Jabba is a big, slimy (both physically and characteristically) space slug who speaks Huttese, not traditional English, and we all know how much the masses enjoy watching loads of subtitles (or not). How would you make that compelling? I know that it CAN be done, but my faith in these spin-offs isn’t very strong these days. In theory, this would be the Star Wars equivalent of a Mafia film, but I’m not sure if that’s a movie that fans want or that Lucasfilm truly wants to make.
I find this rather baffling, to be honest. Rogue One was a story that didn’t particularly need to be told, but one that made sense from a cinematic standpoint. Same goes for films focused on Solo, Kenobi, Fett, and Yoda. An X-Wing film makes sense because you can pretty much just make “Top Gun in outer space”. But this? This is a stretch. Yes, it can be done, especially with the right director and writers. That said, my faith in this particular idea isn’t high. There are some Star Wars characters that are probably just better off appearing as supporting players in other films, as opposed to getting their own feature. As far as I’m concerned, Jabba the Hutt is one of those characters.
