17 years after making a mark with their second feature, Super Troopers, the comedy troupe Broken Lizard have finally made a sequel. Today, Fox Searchlight unveiled the first teaser for Super Troopers 2. The five leads have returned, of course, as have Brian Cox, Marisa Coughlan, and Lynda Carter. The newcomers include Rob Lowe, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Tyler Labine, Jim Gaffigan, and Will Sasso.
Anyway, enough with my pontificating! Are you ready to finally watch the Super Troopers 2 trailer? Then do it right meow…
The project was crowd-funded using Indiegogo, with the initial goal of $2 million blown past well before the pledging window ended. The group finally managed to drum up a budget of $4.4 million when all was said and done, more than doubling the initial goal. Whether or not that fan enthusiasm will translate into another hit for Broken Lizard is anyone’s guess.
Broken Lizard has had an up-and-down career since their debut with 1996’s Puddle Cruiser. That film was a bit of a Sundance hit upon arrival, but its momentum was squandered when the troupe foolishly passed on every purchase offer until no more came rolling in. It eventually received an unceremonious DVD release in 2005, which has since gone out of print.
Super Troopers proved to be a hit for them five years later, earning $18.5 million ($23.2 million worldwide) off of a budget of $1.2 million. Nowadays should a haul would make a film a huge success, press-wise, but at the time it only managed to help them score a decent deal for their next feature, 2004’s Club Dread. Unfortunately for them, the $8.6 million-budgeted horror comedy only raked in $5 million domestically ($7.7 million worldwide), stopping their momentum in its tracks.
2006’s Beerfest, while another beloved cult comedy classic, didn’t fare much better. This led to their next film, 2009’s restaurant comedy The Slammin’ Salmon, receiving only a limited theatrical release. Since then, the band of actors have worked regularly in other projects outside of the brand. Not counting a stand-up comedy film in 2010, Super Troopers 2 marks their first feature as Broken Lizard in nine years.
Super Troopers 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the 2001 cult classic. It is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, from a screenplay by Broken Lizard. The film is produced by Richard Perello. It stars Jay Chandrasekhar as ‘Senior Trooper Arcot “Thorny” Ramathorn’, Steve Lemme as ‘Trooper MacIntyre “Mac” Womack’, Paul Soter as ‘Trooper Jeff Foster’, Kevin Heffernan as ‘Trooper Rodney “Rod” Farva’, Erik Stolhanske as ‘Trooper Robert “Rabbit” Roto’, Brian Cox as ‘Captain John O’Hagen’, Marisa Coughlan as ‘Officer Ursula Hanson’, Rob Lowe as ‘Guy Le Franc’, Emmanuelle Chriqui as ‘Genevieve Aubois’, Jim Gaffigan as ‘Larry Johnson’ and Lynda Carter as ‘Governor Jessman’. Hayes MacArthur, Will Sasso, and Tyler Labine also appear.
Super Troopers 2 arrives in theaters on April 20th, 2018.
