RLJ Entertainment has release the first teaser trailer for Brawl in Cell Block 99. The film is the latest effort from S. Craig Zahler, the director of Bone Tomahawk and the currently-filming Dragged Across Concrete. The crime-filled action thriller stars Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson, and Udo Kier, among others.
A former boxer-turned-drug runner lands in a prison battleground after a deal gets deadly.
That’s a pretty low key, laid back trailer. It lays out a ’70s crime tone and posits Vaughn in a role that might have been in Joe Don Baker’s wheelhouse back in the day. According to by Zahler, however, the film’s final act is anything but laid back…
“I think the film escalates to an absolutely deranged climax that’s kind of reminiscent of ‘The Story of Riki-Oh’ but for the first hour it is more of a sober crime drama.”
That’s a pretty bold statement to make. I don’t actually expect it to live up to the insanity of Riki-Oh, but then again, few films do. Still, it’s very clear that Zahler has made yet another brutal slice of exploitation filmmaking here.
