Marvel and Sony‘s upcoming untitled Spider-Man sequel officially has some writers. Both Chris McKenna (The Lego Batman Movie) and Erik Sommers (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) will return to script the follow-up to this year’s hit, Spider-Man: Homecoming. The pair have apparently impressed the hell out of Marvel, as they also scripted next year’s Ant-Man and The Wasp, which is currently filming.
No filmmaker is currently set for what I’ll refer to for now as Homecoming 2, although Jon Watts is expected back and reportedly in negotiations at the moment. Tom Holland will, of course, return as the titular hero. Robert Downey Jr. is not expected to reprise Iron Man in the sequel, although rumor has it that our friendly-neighborhood Spidey will be teaming up with a different Avenger in some capacity. The film will also be the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
No other cast is currently set for the film either, but don’t be too surprised if Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Zendaya, Donald Glover, and more all show up again. Homecoming did a great job of establishing a support system for Peter Parker and the next one will no doubt further flesh them all out. The same likely holds true for antagonists, since a few of Spidey’s foes made it out of the film alive. As comic fans know all too well, no prison bars can hold a supervillain for long.
Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is currently slated to arrive in theaters July 5th, 2019.
