Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that, despite star Tom Cruise‘s recent injury on the set of Mission: Impossible 6, production for Top Gun: Maverick is still set for early next year. The uber-producer also made it known recently that the project’s script is receiving a polish by Eric Warren Singer.
Not to be confused with Eric “The Catman” Singer, Mr. Eric Warren previous writing work includes Tom Tykwer’s The International and David O. Russell’s American Hustle, as well as upcoming films like Francis Lawrence’s Red Sparrow and (most importantly) Joseph Kosinski’s Only the Brave. Why is that important? Because Kosinki is also directing this!
The film remains on target to begin production in late January or early February next year. Top Gun: Maverick is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 12th, 2019. No other casting beyond Cruise himself has been made at this point. Here’s hoping that they can manage to at least get Val Kilmer back in there as Tom “Iceman” Kazanski, if not a few more of the original Top Gun stars. After all, there’s got to be someone hanging around that’s still knocking Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell down a peg.
