New ‘The Purge: The Island’ Details Revealed

Not much is currently known about the next film in The Purge franchise. We know that writer/director James DeMonaco is stepping away from the camera this time and merely penning and producing it. We know that it is currently titled The Purge: The Island. We know that Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands) has been set to direct and we have a release date. Thus far, that’s about it!

According to a recent interview with DeMonaco, the film will detail the very first Purge, which occurred on Staten Island…

“I said it’s the first experimental Purge, which I don’t know if I was supposed to say, but now I’ve said it, so you have it. Next July 4, it’ll be coming.”

It will also tackle a few more economic issues within the world of the films, such as why some people don’t just evacuate before Purge Night rolls around…

“I was wondering how you get people to stay for the first Purge, and what they do is they start monetizing it. People from Staten Island can easily go to Brooklyn for the evening, so what they do is start promising very decent sums of money for the very poor people in the neighborhood. It becomes a monetization of murder and violence, incentivizing killing and keeping people around for them to be victims. So you see the inception of how grotesque the idea of the Purge is, and the manipulation upon the society.”

The Purge: The Island arrives in theaters on July 4th, 2018. In addition to this fourth film, DeMonaco also continues to develop a TV series spin-off for the franchise that will further explore the world within it. The show has been set up at Syfy. It is expected to also arrive sometime in 2018.
