[Trailer] ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ Gets Ready For War

Universal has issued the first trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising. The sequel to Warner Bros. 2013 blockbuster, Universal ended up with custody of this follow-up after Legendary Pictures’ divorce from WB. Original director Guillermo Del Toro only remains on board as producer, with Steven S. DeKnight (“Daredevil“, “Spartacus“) taking over the reins this time. John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) stars as the son of Idris Elba’s character, with seemingly only Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Burn Gorman among the returning cast.

The Jaegers look a bit too plasticine, but that’s something that will likely be taken care of over the next 5 months of post-production. Beyond that? This looks fun. While I like the original film, I wasn’t nearly as in love with it as most. It looked great and the Jaeger designs were excellent, but I found the story too generic and the monster designs way to bland.

This film looks like it’s pulling more from the fun nature of classic kaiju cinema than the last, with some more interesting monster designs. Whether or not it will have an intriguing enough story to back it all up this time is anyone’s guess, but I have my fingers cross. I wanted to love the first one and I want to love this one.

Pacific Rim: Uprising is a sequel to the 2013 science fiction action film. It is directed by Steven S. DeKnight, from a screenplay by Emily Carmichael, Steven S. DeKnight, T.S. Nowlin, and Kira Snyder. The film is produced by Guillermo Del Toro, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, John Boyega, and Femi Oguns. It stars John Boyega as ‘Jake Pentecost’, Scott Eastwood as ‘Nate Lambert’, Cailee Spaeny as ‘Amara Namani’, Jing Tian as ‘Liwen Shao’, Adria Arjona as ‘Jules’, Rinko Kikuchi as ‘Mako Mori’, Charlie Day as ‘Dr. Newt Geiszler’, Burn Gorman as ‘Dr. Hermann Gottlieb’, Ivanno Sakhno as ‘Vik’, Karan Brar as ‘Suresh’, Mackenyu as ‘Ryoichi’, Zhu Zhu as ‘Juen’, and Levi Meaden as ‘Ilya’.

Pacific Rim: Uprising arrives in theaters on March 23rd, 2018.
