[Trailer] ‘Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built’

Lionsgate and CBS Films have issued the first teaser for their spooky frightfest, Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built. The film is written and directed by the Spierig Bros. and carries a great cast that counts Helen Mirren, Sarah Snook, and Jason Clarke among its ranks. That’s a pretty great line-up of talent.

As for the plot? In the wake of her family’s sudden deaths, firearms heiress Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) becomes convinced that her she is cursed. She then sets about building the Winchester Mystery House in California after consulting a medium. As long as construction never ceases, she believes the evil spirit haunting her will be kept at bay.

The Spierig Bros. gained a lot of cult attention for their 2003 feature debut, Undead. They followed it up with the well-received Daybreakers in 2009 and the wonderful (but underseen) Predestination in 2014. Now they have returned with a one-two punch of Jigsaw this month and Winchester early next year. Their films are always inventive and worth seeking out, so the fact that we’re getting two so close together excites me.

I’m a bit hesitant about Jigsaw, due to how off the rails the Saw franchise previously went. I have no hesitancy in my excitement for this film, however. The talent is top-notch, the subject matter is intriguing, and this teaser is effective.
