With Justice League in post-production, Aquaman on the verge of filming, and The Flash deep in pre-production, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are finally beginning to form their plans for their post-2018 slate. Affleck’s Batman is slowly ramping up and Dwayne Johnson is beginning to take meetings again. So outside of a few random smaller projects (Gotham City Sirens, for instance), the last big gun in the to-do list is Green Lantern Corps. The science fiction buddy action epic was loosely penciled in awhile back for a 2020 release, but not much has been said about it since…until now!
Warner Bros. has hired DC mainstay writer David Goyer and screenwriter Justin Rhodes (Contract Killers, Unmanned) to pen the project. According to , the film is still expected to be a buddy actioner pairing up Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart for an exciting intergalactic adventure. The direction being taken with this particular DC Extended Universe film is apparently “Lethal Weapon in space”. I hope they mean that tonally and not just because they are space cops and one of them is white and the other African-American.
Goyer has been writing DC films forever a decade know, working alongside Christopher Nolan on his Dark Knight trilogy and then Zack Snyder on Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Since his tenure on BvS, Goyer has stuck mostly to producing DC TV shows such as “Constantine” (both the live action series and the forthcoming animated one) and Syfy’s “Krypton“, which is expected to premiere later this year. Rhodes, in additions to the aforementioned pair of movies, has been moving about numerous high profile blockbuster projects such as Universal’s Mass Effect adaptation and Fox’s remake of Fantastic Voyage.
Green Lantern (no matter the iteration) is the only major Justice League member yet to be cast in this run of films. For a time there was talk of at least one of the roles (be it Jordan or Stewart) being cast for a quick cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League later this year. It’s looking like such a fleeting appearance will not come to pass. Also, with Snyder’s Justice League 2 now removed from its original 2019 release slot, Green Lantern Corps is likely to be the first time we see either cosmic-powered space cop in action. Hopefully things will turn out better than the Ryan Reynolds-starring 2011 film.
