“The name’s Summers. Nathan Summers.” Well, this is certainly an unexpected casting choice, although not an unwelcome one. Ever since the filmmakers of Deadpool let loose that fan favorite mutant Cable would be a lead character in Deadpool 2, speculation has been off the charts. This was fueled even further by the post-credts tag in the first film, which teased a couple of actor names, albeit jokingly.
Since then, it’s been nothing but nonstop rumors and half-truths involving the likes of Mel Gibson, Stephen Lang, Dolph Lundgren, Gerard Butler, Jon Hamm, Kyle Chandler, and a few others. Now we have another name to add to that list and he’s one that seemingly has a leg up on many of the others: Pierce Brosnan. Before I prattle on, I give you the evidence. First up is a fun photo that appeared earlier today on the Instagram account of Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds himself (hat tip to )…
Hugh Jackman. Pierce Brosnan. Ryan Reynolds. Not to be outdone by Wade Wilson, however, Wolverine followed suit on Twitter…
— Hugh Jackman
What does this mean? A lot, but also nothing. As far as we know, no casting has been set in stone for Cable in Deadpool 2. Brosnan has indeed read for the part, but so have others. Honestly, I’d be surprised if Fox isn’t furious over this. Had it come in conjunction with a casting notice it’d be one thing, but this smacks of Reynolds pulling publicly for a favorite among those in contention for the role.
That aside, Brosnan is well-suited for the part. He might not be the most obvious choice, but like Gibson and a few others mentioned above, he’s a seasoned action star. He’s also one that would entice audiences. While his post-Bond films haven’t been hits, virtually every Bond experienced a similar drop in audience attendance after vacating the role of 007. Even Sean Connery didn’t find vastly renewed fame until over a decade and a half after leaving the core franchise behind.
Whatever you thought of its plot or direction, The November Man proved only a few years back that Brosnan still “has it” as an action star. As for the right sense of humor, look no further than The Matador. He will no doubt bring his experience and talent to this role, should he get it. So how about it, folks? Do you like the idea of this former James Bond bantering with and fighting alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool 2? After all, he already has a golden eye…
