UPDATED: New ‘Alien: Covenant’ Trailer Looks Like A Return To Form

UPDATE: The red band version of the trailer can now be found at the end of the piece.

Boom! Originally expected to drop tomorrow, Fox has unleashed the latest trailer for Alien: Covenant a day early and we couldn’t be happier. The first trailer, while received well overall, was criticized for seeming like little more than a slasher movie. While I’d argue that half the films in this franchise are literally just that, that’s a subject for another time. This new trailer, however, opens up the scope a bit and waves around a few big set pieces sure to push it beyond typical monster/slasher territory…

Yep, I’m still 100% sold. Hell, I’m now looking forward to it even more than I was before. The characters look fleshed out, making up for some of the more one-dimensional folks inhabiting Prometheus. The creature work looks top-notch, even the few CGI shots we are shown here, all of which will be even more polished in three months’ time. Will it rank as high as Alien or Aliens in terms of iconic quality? Probably not, but expecting it to reach such a high bar is a bit much. Instead, I’ll happily embrace a film that’s at least as good as Alien 3 or as odd as Alien: Resurrection. Mostly, I’m just hoping for something like Prometheus, only more coherent and with better pacing. Again, I love everything I am seeing here.

Since we missed publishing it upon arrival, you can also find the prologue sequence below. Enjoy!

Alien: Covenant is the eighth film in Fox’s on-going Alien franchise and the follow-up to Prometheus. It is directed by Ridley Scott, from a screenplay by Michael Green, Jack Paglen, and John Logan. The film stars Michael Fassbender as ‘David’ and ‘Walter’, Katherine Waterston as ‘Daniels’, Danny McBride as ‘Tennessee’, Amy Seimetz as ‘Faris’, Noomai Rapace as ‘Dr. Elizabeth Shaw’, and Guy Pearce as ‘Peter Weyland’. Billy Crudup, James Franco, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, and Benjamin Rigby also star.

Alien: Covenant arrives in cinemas nationwide on May 19th, 2017.
