Despite principal photography taking place in late 2014, Geostorm is only just now arriving before us later this year. It hits this October, three years after production initially began. Hopefully all of that extra development time (and constant reshoots) has produced something worthy of its insane plot. So what is the plot? Nature is going berserk because we messed with it, causing weather to wage an all-out war on humanity. Also, there’s a plot to assassinate the president. I’m not sure how those ideas were conjured up together, but I’m glad they were. This is dumb on a level that I can truly embrace with open arms.
I could do without the now-standard “classic happy song sung in a slow creepy way” trope, but other than that, I’m in. Nature is destroying the hell out of everything and Roland Emmerich is nowhere in sight! I guess his destructive habits have permanently rubbed off on director Dean Devlin, his longtime writing and producing partner. It’s playing like the most insane sequel to Emmerich’s 2012 imaginable. Add in Gerard Butler (London Has Fallen, Gods of Egypt) and I’m in heaven. Seriously, this looks insanely stupid and I will be there opening night with a huge grin on my face. Is it October yet?
Geostorm is the directorial debut of producer Dean Devlin (Stargate, Independence Day). Devlin directs from a script by himself and Paul Guyot. The disaster picture is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Dean Devlin, Marc Roskin, and Rachel Olschan. It stars Gerard Butler, Abbie Cornish, Jim Sturgess, Alexandra Lara, Ed Harris, Andy Garcia, Adeparo Oduye, Eugenio Derbez, Amr Waked, and Billy Slaughter.
Geostorm arrives in cinemas on October 20th, 2017.
