‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Locks In Its Cast

Now that production is about to begin on Mission: Impossible 6, its main cast has been revealed. Surprisingly its roster is filled with returning players more than ever before, retaining the majority of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation‘s cast, including Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin, and Sean Harris. That film’s writer/director, Christopher McQuarrie, has also been retained, making this the first major repeat behind the camera as well. All previous entries in the on-going espionage franchise have been written and directed by different people.

The most curious reprisal is Sean Harris. The actor played the villain in Rogue Nation, a vicious adversary named ‘Solomon Lane’ who was head of a rival sinister spy agency, The Syndicate. Might that group be making a return this time? Will Lane escape his confines and wreck havoc on the world once more? Or are we in for a Hannibal Lecter scenario where Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must go to Lane for advice to better take down a new threat? We know nothing of the plot, so any and all remain possibilities at this stage.

Our newcomers this time out are Henry Cavill (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Sian Brooke (“Sherlock“), and Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown“). Cavill appears to be taking on the slot vacated by Jeremy Renner as a top IMF official. Renner is, of course, indisposed with his Hawkeye duties in the Marvel films this year. Kirby is apparently our new female lead. Brooke’s role has not yet been specified in any way. Chances are good that at least one of these three is a villain, be they an overt baddie or a mole within the IMF. Given how prevalent the latter trope has been in this franchise, I wouldn’t put it past them to make Henry “Superman” Cavill such a threat.

Mission: Impossible 6 is an adaptation of the classic TV series of the same name and the latest installment of Paramount’s on-going espionage action franchise. It is written/directed by Christopher McQuarrie and produced by J.J. Abrams, via Bad Robot. The project is also produced by Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie, Bryan Burk, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Matt Grimm, Tommy Harper, and Jake Myers. The film stars Tom Cruise as ‘Ethan Hunt’, Rebecca Ferguson as ‘Ilsa Faust’, Simon Pegg as ‘Benji Dunn’, Ving Rhames as ‘Luther Stickell’, Alec Baldwin as ‘Alan Hunley’, and Sean Harris as ‘Solomon Lane’. Henry Cavill, Vanessa Kirby, and Sian Brooke also appear.

Mission: Impossible 6 will arrive in theaters on July 27th, 2018.
