Earlier this evening at the MTV Movie Awards, a new trailer for the theatrical adaptation of Stephen King’s It was unveiled. Whereas the first trailer sold mood and terror, this one is focused more on character. Those looking for a lot of Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) action here will be disappointed, but if you’ve been itching for a better glimpse into the heroic Losers Club, look no further…
That’s a great second trailer. This is coming earlier than I initially expected one to, but because it’s wildly different in approach than the last one, it works like gangbusters. Here we get to see our “lucky seven” actually interacting with one another as kids, instead of solely talking about “It”. Little is given away here in the way of plot, but this preview shows us that these kids have great chemistry with one another. Both the dialogue and their rapport seem natural. That’s of major importance, given that the majority of the film will rest entirely upon their shoulders. One or two weak links and the walls would come tumbling down. Based on what I’m seeing here, that’s something we don’t need to be worry about anymore.
The original ’90s miniseries had a great Pennywise and a good group of kids, with the (half-miscast) adult portion being the biggest problem. We don’t have to worry about an adult cast (yet) and the kids seem to be on point. Now it’s just a matter of seeing how Skarsgard’s performance as Pennywise comes off, beyond facial expressions and body language. He has those down pat, so far as I can see. His voice, tone, and cadence, however? Those will make the rest of this delicate formula sink or swim in Derry’s (Mr. Bob) gray water.
IT is based on the popular novel of the same name by Stephen King. This new adaptation is directed by Andres Muschietti, from a screenplay by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman. The picture is produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, David Katzenberg, Barbara Muschietti, and Seth Grahame-Smith. The film stars Bill Skarsgard as ‘It/Pennywise’, Jaeden Lieberher as ‘Bill Denbrough’, Jeremy Ray Taylor as ‘Ben Hanscom’, Sophia Lillis as ‘Beverly Marsh’, Finn Wolfhard as ‘Riche Tozier’, Wyatt Olef as ‘Stanley Uris’, Chosen Jacbos as ‘Mike Hanlon’, Jake Dylan Grazer as ‘Eddie Kaspbrak’, Nicholas Hamilton as ‘Henry Bowers’, Owen Teague as ‘Patrick Hockstetter’, Logan Thompson as ‘Victor “Vic” Criss’, Jake Sim as ‘Reginald “Belch” Huggins’, Jackson Robert Scott as ‘George Denbrough’, Javier Botet as ‘The Leper’, Tatum Lee as ‘Judith’, Steven Williams as ‘Leroy Hanlon’, Stephen Bogaert as ‘Alvin Marsh’, Pip Dwyer as ‘Sharon Denbrough’, Geoffrey Pounsett as ‘Zack Denbrough’, Ari Cohen as ‘Rabbi Uris’, Stuart Hughes as ‘Oscar “Butch” Bowers’, and Megan Charpentier as ‘Greta Bowie’.
It arrives in theaters on September 8th, 2017.
