‘Judge Dredd’ Moves To Television

The good news? Judge Dredd is coming back. The bad news? No, it isn’t in the form of a Dredd sequel. Entertainment Weekly has the scoop that the 2000 AD property is returning with another live action adaptation, this time in the form of a television series titled “Judge Dredd: Mega-City One“. IM Global and Rebellion have paired up on the project, which will be spearheaded by IM Global Television’s Mark Stern (“Battlestar Galactica“, “Defiance“) and Stuart Ford, as well as Rebellion’s Jason Kingsley and Chris Kingsley. The latter three actually served as producers on 2012’s Dredd.

Judge Dredd: Mega-City One” does not currently have a network home, nor have any showrunners been set. The project is still in its early stages of development, which means it likely will not arrive until sometime in 2018. The character and his world were previously brought to life in the aforementioned 2012 film, as well as 1995’s Judge Dredd, which saw action star Sylvester Stallone in the titular role.

No doubt countless fans around the world are clamoring for Karl Urban to reprise the role of Judge Dredd on the series, but as awesome as that would be, I’ll honestly be surprised if the show goes that route. Surprises could happen, but I’d say there’s a good chance that the powers that be will want to starts this iteration of the character with a clean break.
