Universal‘s latest reboot of The Mummy arrives in theaters later this week and the talent behind it are out meeting with the press in full force. Speaking to Fandom recently, producer/director Alex Kurtzman spoke about future plans for Dark Universe, the all-encompassing moniker for the studio’s revived monster-fueled cinematic universe. One of the subjects that came up was future actors that Kurtzman & Co. would like to see added to the roster. The producer obliged: Angelina Jolie, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Charlize Theron.
It is worth noting that we are in grain of salt territory here. The four actors listed above merely comprise a wishlist for Kurtzman, not a scoop. That said, considering the fact that Jolie has been linked to the role of the Bride of Frankenstein for well over a year now, it does make one wonder. Are Fassbender, Lawrence, and Theron being sought for roles as well? Probably. They are all in demand actors and constantly chased for tentpole properties these days, so them being on a wishlist is expected. Whether or not they would be interested is anyone’s guess. Personally, I think Fassbender would make a fantastic Dracula, having played a character already in the same ballpark in Blood Creek (pictured above).
Conspicuously absent from this wishlist, however, are previously-linked stars Dwayne Johnson and Scarlett Johansson. The former was mentioned last year in regards to the promised new Wolf Man reboot. The latter has been linked to the Creature from the Black Lagoon redo even longer than that. Have both since passed on these respective projects or is it just a simple oversight during what is probably just a quick remark from Kurtzman?
It honestly doesn’t matter. These four names have a significance only in that it gives us further proof that the studio and the producers are invested in hiring interesting, recognizable actors for these roles. Scoring Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Sofia Boutella, Johnny Depp, and Javier Bardem already made this clear, but the above choices cement it. So no matter who they eventually hire to play the Bride, the Wolf Man, Dracula, the Phantom, and the Hunchback, odds are it’s going to be an actor you’re pretty well familiar with when the time comes.
