All Wrapped Up: The Universal Mummy Movies Ranked

5. The Mummy (2017)
This latest revival of the decades-long franchise certainly isn’t a great film by any means, but it is often a fun one. The tone is darker here than in the Brendan Fraser trilogy, but the laughs and pulp adventure moments are still plentiful. On the negative side of things, Tom Cruise is slightly miscast as a Bruce Campbell-esque cad adventurer, there’s too much CGI on display, and the tone is all over the place. Those misgivings aside, it’s a surprisingly entertaining affair, making it an odd but not unwelcome start to Universal’s revival of their monster franchises. As for mummies? Oh, there a plenty here, from the all-powerful Princess Ahmanet to a horde of lumbering zombie-ish goons. It gets pretty silly at times, but still manages to be a solid slice of popcorn entertainment.
