2. The Mummy (1999)
I can hear the cries of sacrilege already! Curse me if you must, but Stephen Sommers’ mummified romp was a blast to behold 18 years ago and it remains just as much fun today. It’s smart, funny, suspenseful, and utterly sincere fun from start to finish. The cast is impeccable and Sommers’ direction has never been more jazzed up with a love of monster cinema, save for maybe Deep Rising. Is it more of a remake of The Mummy’s Hand than the original 1932 film? Of course. Is it an Indiana Jones rip-off? Absolutely, but it’s a damn good one. Sure, its sequels are a bust, but the 1999 film remains a keeper to this day.
