Sony and Columbia Pictures have released their first trailer for Alpha, a prehistoric adventure tale. Previously titled The Solutrean, the film is directed by Albert Hughes. One half of the Hughes Brothers directing team, Albert has previously helmed such films as Dead Presidents, From Hell, and The Book of Eli. This marks the first film he has directed on his own without brother Allen Hughes alongside him. Allen previously went solo on the 2013 crime thriller, Broken City.
After a hunting expedition 20,000 years ago in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic period goes awry, a young caveman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) struggles against the elements to find his way home all the while developing a friendship with a wolf.
A “boy and his dog” tale set during prehistoric times where a stranded caveman and a wolf form a bond? This could either be an intriguing survival adventure tale or an utterly saccharine “dog movie”. I’ve generally liked Hughes’ work in the past, so I’m inclined to give the filmmaker the benefit of the doubt here. Besides, it’s hard to not look forward to a film that features man-eating sabretooh tigers.
Alpha is an historical drama set during the Paleolithic era. It is directed by Albert Hughes, from a screenplay by Dan Wiedenhaupt. The picture is produced by Andrew Rona. The film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Leonor Varela, Jens Hulten, Natasha Wilson, Marcin Kowalczyk, Spencer Bogaert, and Johannes Haukur Johannesson.
Alpha arrives in theaters on March 2nd, 2018.
