Sony and Columbia Pictures have issued the first trailer for Only the Brave, their upcoming drama about the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona and the firefighters tasked with stopping it. Previously residing over at Lionsgate under the title Granite Mountain, Sony scooped the film up (along with the Sicario sequel, Soldado) when the former studio let go of the picture earlier this year. The film stars Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, and many more. Only the Brave is the third film from director Joseph Kosinski, who previously helmed Tron: Legacy and the Tom Cruise-starrer Oblivion. The filmmaker is actually next re-teaming with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick.
It looks good and a whole lot more down to Earth than Kosinski’s previous work. The cast is stacked, the director has a great eye, and it has a compelling story to tell. As long as it doesn’t skew too simple and broad with its execution, we could be looking at a winner here. As a fan of both Ron Howard’s Backdraft and more recent disaster fare like Peter Berg’s Deepwater Horizon, I’m looking forward to seeing what this film has to offer come October.
Only the Brave is based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and the events of the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski, from a screenplay by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer. The picture is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Thad Luckinbill, Trent Luckinbill, Michael Menchel, Erik Howsam, Dawn Ostroff, Molly Smith, and Jeremy Steckler. The film stars Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, James Badge Dale, Taylor Kitsch, Jennifer Connelly, Jeff Bridges, Andie MacDowell, Scott Haze, Alex Russell, Ben Hardy, Rachel Singer, Geoff Stults, and Natalie Hall.
Only the Brave arrives in theaters on October 20th, 2017.
