Director Jeremy Saulnier Is A ‘True Detective’

After months of rumors, rumblings, and the occasional factual nugget, details are finally rolling out about the forthcoming third season of “True Detective“. Yesterday, HBO revealed directors, a setting, and a logline for the dark mystery series’ return. The first season had only one director (Cary Fukunaga) for the whole thing, whereas the second season has six. Season 3 will have only two: Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room) and creator Nic Pizzolatto (The Magnificent Seven, Galveston) himself.

“The next installment of ‘True Detective’ tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

Vague and ominous. I like it! Of course it instantly sounds more akin to the horror-tinged serial killer focus of the first season than the crime (and sex crime) ring conspiracies of the second. As before, Pizzolatto has penned most of the episodes himself, with David Milch (“Deadwood“) pitching in a bit this time as well. Mahershala Ali (“Luke Cage“, Moonlight) is currently the only cast member on board the project. He will be playing Wayne Hays, a North Arkansas state police detective.

HBO’s Casey Bloys on the talent behind the next round of “True Detective”…

“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts. With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of ‘True Detective’”

The series currently has not set a production timeline, but look for things to come together quickly now that the broader strokes are in place. Producers on the coming season are expected to include Cary Fukunaga, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Bard Dorros, Richard Brown, Steve Golin, David Milch, and Nic Pizzolatto. No expected premiere date has been announced at this time.
