[Trailer] ‘Insidious: The Last Key’ Unlocks Your Terror

Universal and Blumhouse have released the first trailer for Insidious: The Last Key, the latest entry in their popular supernatural horror franchise. The film is once again produced by James Wan (The Conjuring, Aquaman) and Leigh Whannell (Saw), with the latter writing the script and co-starring alongside returning leads Lin Shaye and Angus Sampson. You can check out both the domestic and international trailers below.

The film is set years before the events from the previous films and follows Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), in her youth in New Mexico, that begins to be haunted by a malevolent and demonic spirit in their own house, pushing her deeper into the Further.

The first film in this franchise remains one of my favorite modern horror films to date. Despite having a low budget, James Wan managed to crafted a devilishly imaginative Poltergeist for the modern era and he birthed a new franchise in the process. His second outing didn’t quite pack the punch that the first one did, but it’s wild antics made it a worthwhile follow-up regardless.

I felt that this series lost a step with the third film, which Whannell himself directed. It’s a solid spook tale, but pales in comparison to the first two. It simply lacked their imagination and ingenuity. This sequel, which is directed by Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan), appears to be injecting a lot of that back into the proceedings and I can’t wait to see what these folks have (pardon the pun) conjured up for us this time out.

Insidious: The Last Key is the fourth installment in the Insidious franchise. It is directed by Adam Robitel, from a screenplay by Leigh Whannell. The film is produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and James Wan. It stars Lin Shaye as ‘Elise Rainier’, Leigh Whannell as ‘Specs’, Angus Sampson as ‘Tucker’, Tessa Ferrer as ‘Aubrey’, Ava Kolker as ‘Young Elise’, Hana Heyes as ‘Teenage Elise’, and Casey Lee Harris as ‘Young Tucker’, and Marcus Henderson as ‘Detective Whitefield’. Kirk Acevedo, Spencer Locke, Bruce Davison, Caitlin Gerard, Javier Botet, Jerrika Hinton, and Josh Stewart also appear.

Insidious: The Last Key arrives in theaters on January 5th, 2018.
