‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Are Coming To The CW

Those of us who caught the first season of “Riverdale” have been wondering for awhile now if The CW would add Sabrina the Teenage Witch to the mix. After all, she only lives across the water from Riverdale itself and has long been a staple of Archie Comics. Furthermore, her own comic book series was wonderfully revamped at the same time as Archie’s. What better way to expand The CW’s new hit show than to give a spin-off to a teenage sorceress? Apparently the network agrees, as they just began development on “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina“.

announced today that The CW gung-ho for the idea of a dark coming-of-age take on Sabrina and hopes to get an hour-long series out of the character. That’s certainly a far cry from the playfully comedic Melissa Joan Hart series, although don’t be too surprised if the producers have a few actors from the original show guest here. After all, they have a habit of that sort of thing.

Speaking of producers, The CW’s golden god Greg Berlanti (“The Flash“, “Supergirl“) is on the case, along with usual partners in crime Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The latter will be penning the pilot, much as he did with “Riverdale“. Lee Toland Krieger (The Age of Adaline, “Riverdale“) has already been set to direct the eventual pilot and will remain on board to produce the series, should it get the greenlight.

Should everything proceed as planned, a Fall 2018 premiere is expected. That said, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they lock down their Sabrina in advance and have her guest on the upcoming season of “Riverdale” first. I’d almost bet money on it.
