In the wake of Fox letting the first trailer for The New Mutants into the wild, writer/director Josh Boone has opened up a bit more about the project. A spin-off from the studio’s popular X-Men film franchise, New Mutants aims to take super-powered beings into the horror genre. Furthermore, should it prove successful, we could see it also become the start of a brand new trilogy. Boone recently spoke to IGN about the possibility…
“We brought it to FOX as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the 1980s. These are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies.
This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie. Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.
It is connected to and a part of the X-Men universe, and will continue to be a part of the X-Men universe and will be a part of that as it opens up in the next movies and all that.”
He goes on to say that Claremont’s Demon Bear storyline was a heavy influence on the film, but that said Demon Bear will not be the primary antagonist. He also relays that both Warlok and Karma will become main characters in future films, should Fox decide to proceed with sequels. Be sure to check out the full interview, as well as the recently released trailer.
The New Mutants is the 12th film in Fox’s on-going X-Men franchise. It is based on the comics by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. The film is directed by Josh Boone, from a screenplay by Boone and Knate Gwaltney. The picture is produced by Simon Kinberg, Karen Rosenfelt, and Lauren Shuler-Donner. It stars Alice Braga as ‘Dr. Cecilia Reyes’, Anya Taylor-Joy as ‘Illyana Rasputina/Magik’, Maisie Williams as ‘Wolfsbane’, Charlie Heaton as ‘Sam Guthrie/Cannonball’, Henry Zaga as ‘Roberto da Costa/Sunspot’, Blu Hunt as ‘Danielle Moonstar/Mirage’, and Happy Anderson as ‘Reverend Craig’.
The New Mutants will arrive in theaters on April 13th, 2018.
