Over the weekend, Fox released the first trailer for The New Mutants. Their latest spin-off of their X-Men franchise, the film takes the franchise into horror terrain as it places a dangerous group of young mutants within a special facility that might not be as safe as it should be. Looks fantastic to me. Now that Fox is ramping up production on this franchise, the more they branch out with them, the better. After all, New Mutants is the first of three X-Men films arriving in theaters next year. Deadpool 2 will have the comedic action genre covered and X-Men: Dark Phoenix will give us our requisite blockbuster superhero effort, so this one take a trip down terror lane is a great way to differentiate it from the rest. Director Josh Boone declared that he was making a “Stephen King superhero movie” with this film and based on this trailer, he’s done just that.
The New Mutants is the 12th film in Fox’s on-going X-Men franchise. It is based on the comics by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. The film is directed by Josh Boone, from a screenplay by Boone and Knate Gwaltney. The picture is produced by Simon Kinberg, Karen Rosenfelt, and Lauren Shuler-Donner. It stars Alice Braga as ‘Dr. Cecilia Reyes’, Anya Taylor-Joy as ‘Illyana Rasputina/Magik’, Maisie Williams as ‘Wolfsbane’, Charlie Heaton as ‘Sam Guthrie/Cannonball’, Henry Zaga as ‘Roberto da Costa/Sunspot’, Blu Hunt as ‘Danielle Moonstar/Mirage’, and Happy Anderson as ‘Reverend Craig’.
The New Mutants will arrive in theaters on April 13th, 2018.
